Abstract

This study aims to examine zakat education in the context of unlicensed gold mining in North Molosipat Village, Popayato Barat District, Pohuwato Regency, by integrating Islamic law and Islamic education perspectives. The study employed field research with an empirical approach and a descriptive qualitative design. Data were collected through non-participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation involving miners, community members, religious leaders, and village authorities, and were analyzed through data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that zakat implementation is constrained by limited understanding of zakat al-mal, inadequate religious guidance, uncertainty concerning zakat calculation, and the absence of an organized village-level zakat management mechanism. Islamic law analysis indicates that gold is categorized as ma'din and may constitute zakatable wealth when its legal and ownership requirements are fulfilled. However, unlicensed mining creates substantive problems concerning milk al-tam, lawful acquisition, halalan tayyiban, obedience to legitimate regulation, and environmental consequences. The novelty of this study lies in conceptualizing zakat education as an Islamic educational intervention that connects fiqh literacy, ethical economic behavior, environmental responsibility, and community empowerment in mining communities.
